Fo-Ti is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as He Shou Wu, which means Mr. He's black hair. The name comes from the story of an elderly man whose hair is said to have returned to black after he began taking the root, and it tells you what the tradition has valued it for ever since.
Fo-Ti has been revered over centuries for longevity and vitality, for graying and thinning hair, for skin, for libido and sexual vigor, and above all for restoring jing, the life essence, which in that system underlies stamina, resilience, and the pace at which a person ages.
The root in this tincture is prepared, not raw, and the distinction matters more than almost anyone selling it explains. Prepared Fo-Ti has been cured with black bean broth, which is the form the tonic tradition has always used for longevity work. Raw Fo-Ti is a different material with a different and much harsher action, and it is not interchangeable. When a supplier does not say which one they have used, it is usually raw.
